Claude Venard went through a phase of painting Arlequins, using bright colours such a strong reds, vivid greens and sumptuous blues to capture the humorous essence of the Arlequins. His technique was based around the unusual way he applied the paint, scraping it on with a pallet knife, to which he then worked back into scraping into the thick impasto with sharp triangular lines showing a strong cubist influence.
