James Whitelaw Hamilton Biography

Landscape painter. Studied in Glasgow and Paris. He became a member of the New English Art Club in 1887, a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1922 and a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1895.

Born in 1844 J.F Engel was an important European genre painter, who painted with great attention to detail. His technique reveals the texture and richness of his subject’s luxurious surroundings, and in this example is particularly evident in the fabric of the children’s clothing.

He exhibited in Munich, Rome and Paris.
