Messonier is mostly known for his classic French genre scenes and portraits of peasant weddings and aristocratic society. Rosine and Leusen highlights this beautifully. Spring has sprung, and the ladies dressed in elaborate luxurious fabrics sit tentatively listening to the gentleman in red stockings recall a story. Rosine and Leusen was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1866 where it won a medal. It was highly commended at the time by renowned art critic Charles Blanc in the Gazette des Beaux-Artes.
