On The Arun

Richard Ossory Dunlop (1894-1973)

Oil on Board

Ronald Ossory Dunlop moved to Barnham in West Sussex shortly after the end of the Second World War drawn by the light - "as soon as we passed Horsham I used to notice a distinct difference in the light. It was more intense, more diffuse - almost like Provence. The greyness of Surrey seemed to be left behind. It is this marvellous light pervading the landscape hereabouts that is the great attraction to me as a painted. It aluminates quite ordinary scenes and foliage and makes them magical." He was always drawn to harbours, boats and quays and this scene of The River Arun in West Sussex is a particular favourite.
