Pierre Ambrogiani was a French Painter and lithographer celebrated for his expressive, vibrant depictions of Mediterranean landscapes, floral still lives and scenes of daily life in Marseille. Born in Ajaccio, Corsica, he moved to Marseille as a child and later worked as a telegraph boy. It wasn’t until the 1930s that he fully dedicated himself to art, developing a style deeply influenced by the Fauvist movement. His works are marked by bold colours and energetic brushstrokes, echoing the landscapes and seascapes of Southern France, and capturing the vibrant essence of the Provencal region.
Known for his love of vivid colours, Ambrogiani often depicted bustling harbours, markets, and the rich nature around him. His distinctive style, built on self-taught techniques- used a palette dominated by reds, blues and yellows to convey intense emotion and energy. Despite lacking formal training, he gained recognition, particularly for his works that resonated with post war expressionism, and his portrayal of everyday Mediterranean life.
Throughout his career he held major exhibitions in Paris, New York, and Marseille. He received the Prix International de la Biennale de Menton in 1951, the Grand Prix des Peintres Temoins de leur Temps in 1967, and the Prix du Gemail in 1968. There was a major retrospective of the art of Pierre Ambrogiani at the Musee de la Vieille Charite de Marseille in 1973, with an important catalogue. His works remain popular among collectors.
