Campbell Mellon was born in Berkshire 1878, he had little interest in art until his business career took him to Nottingham, this strangely enough was when he started painting seriously. He gallantly served in the First World War despite his pacifist sympathies and after decided to lead a quieter life with his young bride in the seaside town of Gorleston, Norfolk. This was a turning point in his life and artistic career. It was here that he met painter Sir J.S Arnesby Brown who encouraged and tutored Mellon.
Mellon’s paintings reflect the charm of British coastal towns, focusing on scenes of people enjoying the beach, strolling on the promenades, or engaging in simple, everyday activities. He was heavily influenced by the British Impressionists and adopted a light, delicate palette, often characterised by soft blues, greens and sandy yellows. His work leans towards realism but with an impressionistic touch that adds a gentle softness to his subjects. His use of natural light was exceptional, rendering scenes with a warm, welcoming glow that highlights his attention to detail and composition.
His first painting to be exhibited at The Royal Academy in 24 was a beach scene titled ‘Yarmouth- August Bank Holiday’, he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and had more than 50 paintings hung in the Society’s prestigious galleries.
