Jean-Gabriel Domergue, a French painter and illustrator born in 1889, is famously known as “the inventor of the pin-up” for his slender-necked, flawlessly sophisticated portraits of Parisian women from the 1920s. His works are a celebration of feminine beauty and elegance, with refined lightness and fluidity. Each painting captures the lavish stylishness of luxurious fabrics and accessories of the time. With a distinct style, his artworks were cherished during his lifetime, and are still honoured today.
Domergue refined his skills at the successful École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. At first, he was recognised for his landscapes, exhibiting his works at the Salon Des Artistes Français in 1906 at the young age of seventeen, then going on to win the Prix de Rome. Though, during the 1920s, he began painting Parisian ladies in his recognizable style. Domergue also designed dresses, hats and accessories for Paul Poiret, becoming a key individual for the evolution of fashion in his era. He was Curator of the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris starting from 1955 – organising exhibitions of the works of Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lactrec, Goya and others.
