As we explore the works of the Italian furniture designer Carlo Bugatti, Stella Callaghan of Callaghans of Shrewsbury explains why his creations are works of art.

Historically, an artist or maker’s works have been more celebrated after their death than during their lifetime, but the Italian decorator, designer and maker Carlo Bugatti was one of the lucky exceptions.   

In fact, his intricate, Art Nouveau style furniture was long admired during his illustrious career, with a particular highlight of his professional years proving the exhibition of decorative art in Turin in 1902. It was here that the writer Roberto Sacchetti recalls the Queen of Italy admiring Bugatti’s work. She commented that his pieces had a ‘Moorish style’ to them, to which Bugatti rather cheekily replied, “you are mistaken Your Majesty, this style is my own.”
