Lucien Adrion was born in Strasbourg, France in 1889 and died in Cologne 1953. He was considered an engraver, watercolourist and painter from the French school. He was recognised for his vibrant depictions of cityscapes, landscapes, and the liveliness of urban life. His artistic career blossomed in the early 20th century, coinciding with the post-impressionist movement. Being independent by nature, Adrion would rarely divert from his decorative paintings of Normandy beaches or scenes of Paris (his favourite subject). In 1921, he had his first one-man exhibition at Galerie Cheron. He was also a regular exhibitor with the Independents. In 1940, Lucien Adrion exhibited Jardines des Tuileries Salon d'Automne in Paris and in 1941; he exhibited several landscapes at the Salon des Tuileries.
Adrion’s works are characterised by a unique blend of fauvism and impressionism. His bold use of colour and energetic brushstrokes brought a sense of vitality to his scenes.
Adrion travelled extensively throughout Europe, until settling in Paris. He fully immersed himself in the art scene and became known for his portrayals of bustling city streets and fairs as well as tranquil moments in parks. These paintings often feature a harmonious balance of movement and stillness, emphasising the dynamic interplay between people and their surroundings.
Adrion’s technique involved the bright use of swift, fluid brushstrokes and a bright, luminous colour palette. This gave his compositions a sense of immediacy and liveliness, almost as if he were capturing a fleeting moment.
His paintings reflect the optimism and vibrancy of life in early 20th century France. Though not as widely known as his contemporaries, his contribution to French art remains significant and is appreciated by art collectors and enthusiasts today.
