Wilhelm Blanke was a German painter and lithographer. He was trained as a decorative painter by his eldest brother. He later moved to Berlin to work on his profession. From 1892- 1894 he undertook a two-year study tour through Europe’s artistic metropolis to Italy. He settled down in Steglitz near Berlin and attempted to gain recognition as an artist. In March 1901 he married Anna Graf, the oldest daughter of the painter Heinrich Graf.
Blanke was a very versatile painter, he found many of his favourite subjects in nature, completing landscapes, colourful still life’s of flowers as well as the depiction of religious themes. His works often captured the personality and depth of his subjects, blending realism with a subtle romanticism.
Though he may not have achieved the fame of contemporaries, Blanke’s work offers valuable insights into the artistic and social landscapes of his time, making him a notable, if somewhat overlooked, contributor to German art.
