Antoine Bouvard Senior, also known as Marc Aldine, trained in art and architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Known as one of the most prolific painters of Venetian genre from this period, Bouvard's works reflects his love of the city. While he was based in Paris, Bouvard visited Venice often during the 1920's and 1930's and fell in love with its special light and scenery. He specialised in Venetian views for which he is justly famous. These paintings evoke a sense of warmth and beauty, captured in his use of rich, glowing colours.
For the English market he painted under the pseudonym Antoine Bouvard and for the French market Marc Aldine. He showcased his work in galleries across France and Italy, as well as numerous regional European galleries. His two principal galleries were the Whitgift Gallery in Croyden and the Gallery Morisco in Nice, although he also exhibited at the Galerie Paul Claux in Paris.
His enduring popularity has established him as one of the most acclaimed and esteemed painters specializing in Venetian themes. Continuing the family tradition, his son Noel Bouvard painted until his passing in the early 1970s.
