Eugene Henri Cauchois was born in the city of Rouen on the 14th of February 1850. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, becoming a pupil, first of Ferdinand Duboc and later Alexandre Cabanel, who was among the most highly regarded artists of fashionable mid-19th century Paris. Cauchois, as a pupil assisted working on great decorative panels for Paris’s most fashionable noble houses, as well as the palace of Emperor Napoleon III, for whom he was court painter, and the Empress Eugenie.
He is most known for his soft, colourful and lustrous still life compositions, primarily focusing on florals and garden scenes. They reflect a strong influence from the great Impressionist artists of his time. Using their techniques, Cauchois' would create his canvases with layer upon layer of loose and fluid brush strokes, building up to create a detailed image.
