Eugene Galien Laloue was born in Paris on December 1854, to Charles and Endoxie Laloue as the first of 9 children. He was first trained as an architect, and his skills as a draughtsman can clearly be seen in his depictions of Paris. Under the tutelage of Charles Laloue, he quickly gained fame as an artist, specializing in watercolour and gouache. He changed his name to Galien-Laloue as a tribute to his teacher, whom he studied with in 1877. By 1878 he was exhibiting at the Salon and he continued to do so throughout his life. His talent was widely acknowledged by his contemporaries and his work was extremely popular during his lifetime.
