Donald McIntyre was born in 1923 in Yorkshire but brought up in North West Scotland. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art under James Wright At Garelochhead. He has exhibited at the London Galleries, Royal Cambrian Academy, Galleries Racines Brussels, Fosse Gallery and Thackery Gallery.
McIntyre was known for is vibrant depictions of coastal scenes, particularly those of Scotland and Wales. His works, characterised by a post-impressionist style, bold colour choices and expressive brushwork, brought a fresh and modern interpretation to landscape painting. McIntyre’s artistry evolved from a foundation in traditional techniques to an innovative style that married realism with abstraction, making him one of the most distinctive painters of his generation.
His most significant artistic influences were the scottish colourists and French Post- impressionists, particularly Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. These inspirations are clear in his bold approach to colour, his reduction of forms to geometric shapes, and his interest in capturing the essense of a landscape rather than depicting it with strict realism. An important feature in his work is his technique of applying thick layers of oil paint using a palette knife, this impasto technique creates a sense of texture that mirrors the ruggedness of the landscapes he loved.
His paintings are in the collections of H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, Wiliamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead, Newport Art Gallery, Merthyr Tydfil Art Gallery, Welsh Arts Council, National Library of Wales and many more.
