Art played a large part in Carl's academic work taking through Burslem School of Art, the Henry Doulton School of Sculpture and to Stafford College. After qualifying in Figurative Sculpture he launched his career with commission after commission, which secured his reputation for fine quality workmanship both in life-size format and smaller decorative pieces. The list of his completed commissioned work is extensive, including many household names from the sporting world, commerce and the part. A half life size figure of The Duke of Westminster, a full life size bronze of Stanley Matthews and George Best to name a few.
Carl recently won the commission to sculpt the full size horse for the Banbury Cross piece which was unveiled by Princess Anne. A recent review of Carl Payne stated 'Fresh, innovative design and breathtaking attention to detail have ensured the success of this gifted sculptor. Now in the full mastery of his profession, his dynamic and sensual explorations of the human form in mythology, symbolism and life, encapsulated in bronze, are commissioned by galleries private collectors throughout the world.'
