Born in 1918 in Llangefni, Anglesey, Wales, Sir Kyffin Williams RA is known for his expressive Welsh landscapes. Williams played a huge role in Welsh contemporary art and enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime.
Williams attended the Shrewsbury School in Shropshire, before training with a firm of land agents in Phwllheli. In 1938 he joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers, but was discharged in 1941 on account of his epilepsy. It was at this point that, on the advice of his doctor, he sought a new career.
Between 1941 and 1944 Williams attended the Slade School of Fine Art. After completing his training Williams taught part-time at Highgate School in London from 1944 to 1973. After this he returned to a house in Anglesey overlooking the Menai Strait, and immersed himself in his community.
During this time, he spent most of his days outdoors painting and developed his characteristic moody style. The mountains and sea were his primary subjects, depicted in muted colours and thick impasto oil painting.
Throughout his lifetime Williams was awarded many honours. Twice he became president of the Royal Cambrian Academy. In 1970 he was elected ARA, and RA in 1974. It was in 1982 that he received an OBE and in 1999 a knighthood for his services to the arts, . Williams was also made an Honory Fellow of a number of universities, including the University College Swansea, Bangor and Wales, Aberystwyth.
