Venard went through a phase of painting Arlequins, using bright colours such a
strong reds, vivid greens and sumptuous blues to capture the humorous essence
of the Arlequins. His technique was based around the unusual way he applied the
paint, scraping it on with a pallet knife, to which he then worked back into
scraping into the thick impasto with sharp triangular lines showing a strong
cubist influence.
