Waddams’ has captured the sheer size of the bird brilliantly, from the proud, puffed out chest, to the pronounced coxcomb and wattle, you really do get a sense that this is one magnificent creature and matches the portrait's namesake perfectly. The stark black background contrasts beautifully with the red and gold colouring of the cockerel, while the sheer detailing in the brushstrokes creates a tangible difference between the cockerel’s soft, silky feathers to its coxcomb.
